About this activity

Amman: The Modern Capital with Ancient Roots
The modern capital of Jordan, Amman is a vibrant, hilly city that blends ancient history with contemporary life. It’s known for its Roman ruins like the Citadel and Theatre, bustling downtown markets, and trendy cafes. Amman offers a taste of modern Jordanian culture.

  • The Roman Theater:
Carved into the hillside of downtown Amman, this magnificent 2nd-century amphitheater once seated 6,000 spectators for Roman entertainment. One of the Middle East’s largest surviving Roman theaters, its impressive structure now houses three museums within its ancient walls.
  • Jordan Folklore Museum:
Housed in the western wing of the Roman Theater, this museum brings traditional Jordanian life to life through displays of Bedouin tents, agricultural tools, musical instruments, and handicrafts from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
  • Museum of Popular Traditions:
Located in the eastern wing of the Roman Theater, this museum showcases five galleries of traditional costumes from Jordan and Palestine, intricate jewelry, Byzantine church mosaics, pottery, and everyday utensils from bygone eras.
  • Amman Citadel:
Crowning one of Amman’s seven hills, this ancient site has been continuously occupied for over 7,000 years. Its sprawling grounds encompass Roman ruins including the Temple of Hercules, early Islamic remains of the Umayyad Palace, and Byzantine church foundations—all with sweeping views over the city below.
  • Jordan Archaeological Museum:
Perched within the Citadel, this museum established in 1951 displays artifacts spanning Jordan’s long history, including Neolithic plastered skulls and ancient jewelry, all with panoramic views of Amman as a backdrop.

Madaba – The City of Mosaics:
Known as the “City of Mosaics,” Madaba is a cultural and religious treasure located just 30 km southwest of Amman. Renowned for its extraordinary Byzantine and Umayyad mosaic art, the city has been a center of Christian pilgrimage since the 4th century and was named Arab Tourism Capital for the year 2022.

  • Madaba Visitors Center: Housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century building, offering maps, historical exhibits, and resources for visitors.
  • Madaba Archaeological Park: Preserves Roman-era ruins and exquisite Byzantine mosaic floors, including the renowned Hippolytus Hall—a rare 6th-century mosaic depicting an ancient Greek myth.
  • Al-Hussein bin Ali Street (Tourist Street): A vibrant thoroughfare lined with shops selling mosaic art, icons, and local handicrafts, perfect for browsing Madaba’s renowned artisanal traditions.
  • George’s Church: Home to the world-famous 6th-century Madaba Mosaic Map—the oldest preserved cartographic depiction of the Holy Land, featuring over 150 biblical sites with Jerusalem at its center.
  • Madaba Archaeological Museum: Housed in a traditional late Ottoman building, showcasing artifacts spanning over 10,000 years of history, from the Neolithic period through the Ottoman era.

Mount Nebo :
According to tradition, this is the mountain from where Moses viewed the Promised Land. A key pilgrimage site, it offers panoramic vistas across the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. A modern memorial church protects magnificent Byzantine mosaic floors, making it a place of deep historical and spiritual reflection.

Upon arrival at the Madaba Visitors Center, your guide will lead you through the city's most significant sites.
St. George's Church (Church of the Map):
From the Visitors Center, we proceed to St. George's Church, located approximately 240 meters northwest. This Greek Orthodox church was built in 1896 over a 6th-century Byzantine original. Inside, you will find the world-famous Madaba Mosaic Map—the oldest preserved geographic floor mosaic in art history, dating back to approximately 560 AD. Your guide will explain the significance of this extraordinary masterpiece, which depicts over 150 biblical sites with Jerusalem at its center, and how its discovery in 1884 reshaped the understanding of the region's geography.
Madaba Archaeological Park:
After visiting St. George's Church, we continue to the Madaba Archaeological Park, located just a few meters from the Visitors Center. Established in 1995 to preserve and make accessible the archaeological remains from Roman times and several valuable Byzantine mosaic floors, this park is a highlight of the city. Your guide will escort you through the remains of several Byzantine churches showcasing stunning mosaic floors—each revealing intricate artwork that reflects the city's vibrant Christian heritage—while providing historical context and pointing out the artistic details that make these mosaics world-renowned.
Al-Hussein bin Ali Street (Tourist Street):
Following our exploration of the archaeological park, your guide will take you to Al-Hussein bin Ali Street, known locally as "Tourist Street." The museum is housed in a traditional late 19th-century building and showcases artifacts spanning Madaba's long history, including pottery, glassware, coins, and jewelry from Roman, Byzantine, Umayyad, Abbasid, Mamluk, and Late Ottoman periods. The museum is included with the Archaeological Park entrance ticket.

Upon arrival, your guide will lead you through this sacred mountain, believed to be where Prophet Moses stood to view the Promised Land before his death. From the summit (elevation 870 meters), you will gaze across the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and—on exceptionally clear days—the distant hills of Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Your guide will share the biblical narrative and historical significance of this site, which has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries.
Explore the Memorial Church of Moses, originally constructed in the 4th century and rebuilt in the 20th century to preserve its Byzantine heritage. Inside, your guide will point out the remarkably preserved 6th-century mosaic floors, depicting hunting scenes, pastoral life, and exotic animals—among the finest examples of early Christian mosaic art in the region.
Outside, you will see the iconic Bronze Serpent Sculpture (created by Italian artist Giovanni Fantoni in 1984), which symbolizes the biblical story of Moses and the serpent and serves as a striking landmark against the panoramic backdrop.
Your guide will allow approximately 30–60 minutes for exploration of the site.
