Ajloun – A Medieval Fortress in the Highlands
Nestled in the lush, forested highlands of northern Jordan, Ajloun offers a breathtaking blend of medieval history and natural beauty. The area is dominated by evergreen oak woodlands and pine forests, creating a landscape that feels remarkably different from the desert landscapes of southern Jordan. The region’s mild climate and fertile soil have made it a popular escape for locals and travelers alike, with the magnificent 12th-century Ajloun Castle standing as the crown jewel of the area.

Your private guided journey begins in Amman, where your guide leads you to the beautifully restored 2nd-century Roman Theatre, a 6,000-seat amphitheater carved into the hillside. Within the complex, you will discover three fascinating museums showcasing traditional Jordanian life, intricate costumes and jewelry, and exquisite textiles. From there, ascend to the Citadel—Amman’s historical heart occupied for over 7,000 years—to explore the Temple of Hercules, the Umayyad Palace, and the Jordan Archaeological Museum, all while enjoying panoramic views of the capital below. Concluding our Amman exploration, we depart north through the lush highlands to the town of Ajloun.
Your guide will lead you through the magnificent 12th-century Ajloun Castle—a fortress built by a general of Saladin—where you will explore its imposing towers, underground passageways, and original arrow slits while taking in commanding views over the Jordan Valley. The experience culminates with a breathtaking ride on Jordan’s first teleferique—the Ajloun Cable Car—soaring above verdant forests in fully glazed cabins with 360-degree panoramic views, as the silhouette of the castle appears like a sentinel below. Late Morning – Journey to Ajloun: Castle, Museum & Cable Car
Concluding our Amman tour, we depart the capital and drive northwards through the lush highlands of Jordan to the town of Ajloun, renowned for its medieval fortress and stunning forest landscapes. The journey takes approximately 70 km (1 hour 15 minutes).
Ajloun Castle (Qal'at Ar-Rabad) & Ajloun Archaeological Museum:
Upon arrival, your guide will lead you to Ajloun Castle. Perched atop a forested hill, this magnificent 12th-century Islamic fortress was built in 1184 by Izz al-Din Usama, a general and nephew of Saladin, to protect the region against Crusader incursions and control the iron mines.
We then explore its imposing towers, underground passageways, and thick stone walls with original arrow slits. The castle offers commanding strategic views across the Jordan Valley and the surrounding green hills.
Inside the castle, you will find the Ajloun Archaeological Museum, which showcases a range of artifacts portraying the region's history and cultural heritage, including pottery, glassware, coins, and tools from various civilizations that inhabited the area. The museum is included with your castle entrance ticket.
Ajloun Cable Car "Telefrik Ajloun":
Following our exploration of the castle, we experience Jordan's first teleferique, inaugurated in 2023, which offers a breathtaking journey over the verdant forests and rolling hills of Ajloun. The 2.5-kilometer-long cable car glides smoothly above the treetops in fully glazed cabins accommodating up to eight people, providing 360-degree panoramic views of the stunning Mediterranean landscape. The take-off station is situated in the Ajloun development area, with the landing station located near Ajloun Castle. As we soar through the air, you will witness the region's natural beauty with the imposing silhouette of Ajloun Castle appearing like a sentinel above the greenery. Please note that the cable car operates daily from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
Lunch Break:
Time will be allocated for lunch at a local restaurant near Ajloun (optional and not included in the tour price). Your guide can assist with recommendations.
Late Afternoon – Return to Amman:
After exploring Ajloun Castle and enjoying the cable car experience, we begin the return journey to Amman (approx. 70 km, 1 hour 15 minutes). You will be escorted back to your hotel and dropped off in the late afternoon.
